Metal Gates

At Nottingham Metalworks we can make and install a variety of metal gates from large driveway gates to side entrance gates right down to front garden gates that may only be about 3 feet high.

The term metal gate has a much broader meaning these days than it used to 10 or so years ago. Previously 'metal' would have been interchanged with wrought iron and would have meant a gate that was mostly comprised of vertical metal bars with a number of horizontal bars keeping the vertical bars in place. It would mainly be a see-through gate so not a choice for privacy.

These days metal gates also encompass metal and composite and metal and wood gates - where the posts and structural frame of the gate is provided by metal but a solid infill is provided by wood or composite, or sometimes UPVC.

Whichever of these metal gates you are after we are able to fabricate them. Due to our bespoke manufacturing operation as well as using our preferred suppliers for wood and composite infills if you have found a unique wood or composite that you simply must have we can accommodate that too. Simply get in touch to discuss exactly what you want.

Metal Driveway Gates Nottingham

If you are looking for metal driveway gates only this will typically mean a steel-only driveway gate or can also be a term used for wrought iron driveway gates too.

The bulk of the gate will be made from mild steel with decorative bar toppers included which will be typically made from wrought iron. Steel is cheaper than wrought iron but once painted will look almost identical and will last just as long which is why most meta gates are actually made from steel. Properly primed and painted they will last for many years. Since metal driveway gates are quite see through they are generally lighted than composite gates and wooden infill gates so are often hinge fitted although if your slope doesn't allow the space for the gates to be opened wide enough we can make a single metal sliding driveway gate to ensure entry and exit is strightforward.

Metal Composite Gates

Metal composite gates are often simply referred to as composite gates however, there will almost always be elements of metal involved - especially for driveway gates due to the overall weight.

The metal frame provides strength to the structure and also aesthetically enhances the overall look of the gate, especially if the composite and frame are a different colour as it makes the gate more interesting to look at.

Also, the metal frame allows more detailing and ornamental options to be within the top of the metal frame such as a trellis, or for additions to the top of the gate such as spear or ball tops.

The composite infill we use will generally come from a couple of local composite suppliers and we find that between them they cover almost all of the colour and finish options most people will want for their gates.

Metal Framed Wooden Gates

When we construct our wooden composite driveway gates it follows almost the same process as for composites. Sometimes when customers have asked for wood they actually wanted wood effect composite. Whether it is the wood effect or a metal framed timber gate we provide the same quality of surround to provide a quality gate.

When using real timber often a hardwood such as Oak, Cedar, Redwood and Cypress will be used and whilst these hardwoods are much better are weathering the elements than softwoods having a metal surround will extend their lifespan further. As well as that Most people will agree that the contrast of metal framing around the wood looks good too. Depending on the style of gate and use of metal the versatility means that you have have a very traditional, medieval or gothic style door or a very modern contemporary one too. Simply discuss your design aspirations and we're sure to be able to produce the ideal metal framed timber gate.

Frequently Asked Questions about Metal Gates in Nottingham

  • Why choose Nottingham Metalworks to build my metal gates?

We manage our overheads well and have a small team passionate about metal fabrication. We use the best methods and practises to provide the highest quality long-lasting gates possible.

  • What size can you make your metal gates up to?

Whist in theory you can simply add (or more specifically weld) more and more sections to a gate to make it big enough for a castle. However, the reality of how large a gate we can make will largely depend on whether its final weight and size make it hard to get to the site and erect. If we need to hire additional transport and lifting hoists then this is getting to more of a large industrial scale and isn't our focus area. We mainly manufacture our metal gates for residential customers, which normally will mean that a driveway gate will be the largest as this will have the biggest opening. We will advise on suitable options at our site visit as the space and slope of the ground and the fixtures for the gate will all play a part in how big they should be made so that they can be opened and closed fully and safely. For example, a single sliding gate will be twice the size of a pair of hinged driveway gates, so could be up to 5 metres long and 2 metres high which will be on the large side.

  • What is your most popular metal gate?

For a single metal gate, vertical bars with spear tops continue to be popular and the same is for hinged driveway gates although these will be arched whereas most garden side gates will be straight topped.

For composite metal gates having a straight top is more popular for single and driveway gates but with decorative spears too. The most popular composite infill continues to be grey followed by wood effect.

  • What locks can I have on my metal gates?

As standard for metal composite gates, we provide a Locinox - which is a key lock. For metal gates, we can provide most locks although bolts are still popular that allow the use of a padlock.

For driveway gates, the locking options will also depend on the opening method as electric gates will have an electric lock, sliding gates can be manual or electric and most double driveway gates will use a Locinox.

  • Can I have a personalised metal gate?

Yes - we can include letters or numbers within or welded onto the gate. If we can fabricate it, we can fix it into the gate so if you have any special requests we'll gladly look to include them.
