The standard finish for residential exterior handrails is brushed rather than polished — brushed stainless hides fingerprints and minor surface marks better than a mirror polish, and the appearance holds up better over time in an outdoor environment.
TIG welding is the preferred method for stainless steel handrails — it produces very neat, discreet joints that maintain the clean, minimal look the material is associated with. Because the balusters are fabricated by hand in our workshop, the design is not limited to catalogue options.
For contemporary interiors, a fully metal handrail — square section or round tube rail with clean vertical bar infill — gives a more industrial or architectural look that suits open-plan extensions and modern builds well. Building Regulations and Handrails
Handrails in England and Wales are governed by Building Regulations Approved Document K — Protection from Falling, Collision and Impact. Part K sets the minimum height requirements and applies to new builds, extensions and certain renovation projects where the staircase is being altered.
The key requirements for handrails under Part K are:
- Domestic staircases — handrail required on at least one side of any stair flight with more than two risers. Minimum height 900mm above the pitch line of the stair nosings.
- Domestic landings and floors — where guarding is required at a landing or floor level, minimum height is 1,100mm.
- Commercial premises — 1,100mm minimum height throughout, handrails required on both sides of a stair flight wherever practicable.
- Accessibility — for buildings subject to the Equality Act or BS 8300, handrail profiles, heights and continuity are specified to ensure usability by people with limited mobility or grip strength.
