Metal Gates

At Nottingham Metalworks, James fabricates and installs bespoke metal gates for residential and commercial properties across Nottingham and the surrounding areas. Whether you need a simple side access gate, a pair of full-width driveway gates, or something with a more distinctive design, everything is made to measure in our worksho p.

The term metal gate covers a wider range of products than it once did. Traditionally it meant a steel or wrought iron gate built from vertical and horizontal bar — the classic see-through design still popular for driveway gates and garden boundaries. Today it also includes metal-framed gates with composite, timber or UPVC infill panels, where the steel frame provides the structure and security while the infill provides privacy and a different aesthetic.

We can fabricate all of these types — and because everything is made to order, if you have a specific wood, composite or design in mind, get in touch and we will let you know what is achievable.

Metal Driveway Gates Nottingham

If Metal driveway gates — sometimes called steel driveway gates or wrought iron driveway gates — are fabricated from mild steel, often with decorative wrought iron bar toppers. Steel is more cost-effective than solid wrought iron but once properly primed and painted it looks near-identical and will last just as long. Properly finished metalwork should give you many years of service without significant maintenance.

Because steel driveway gates are typically open-bar construction, they are lighter than composite or timber infill alternatives. This makes them well-suited to hinge mounting on most openings. Where the driveway slope or available swing space does not allow hinged gates to open fully, a single sliding gate is a practical alternative — we have fabricated sliding driveway gates up to 5 metres wide for openings where a hinged pair would not work.

Driveway gates start from £1,700 per pair for standard designs, supply and install. For an accurate price we will visit your property, measure the opening, discuss your design preferences and give you a written quote. To complete the look, many customers also ask us about matching metal railings for the driveway boundary — take a look at our metal railings page for options.

Metal Composite Gates

Metal composite gates combine a steel structural frame with composite infill boards — giving you the strength and security of a metal gate with the solid, private appearance of a composite panel. For driveway gates, the steel frame is essential for managing the weight of the infill, and it also opens up design options that a composite-only gate cannot offer — such as decorative top rails, spear finishes, ball tops, or a trellis section above the infill panel.

The steel frame and composite infill can be specified in different colours to create a two-tone look, which tends to make the gate more visually interesting than a single-colour alternative. We source our composite infill from a couple of trusted local suppliers who between them cover the full range of popular colours and finishes — including grey, black, anthracite, wood-effect and white.

Composite gates are generally heavier than open-bar metal gates, so the hanging hardware, post specification and hinge or track arrangement all need to be right for the size of the gate. We will advise on all of this at the site visit. Composite driveway gates start from £1,700 per pair, supply and install.

Metal Framed Wooden Gates Nottingham

Metal framed timber gates offer a look that neither a steel bar gate nor a composite gate can replicate — the warmth and character of real wood with the structural integrity of a welded steel frame. The combination also extends the working life of the timber significantly, since the steel frame takes the load and the brunt of the weather, leaving the wood to do what it does best aesthetically.

When using real timber, we specify hardwoods for longevity — Oak, Cedar, Redwood and Cypress are all suitable and weather well in the UK climate. The choice of timber, frame profile, and opening mechanism together determine the final character of the gate. A heavily detailed steel frame with oak boards gives a traditional, almost medieval look. A clean minimal frame with contemporary cedar creates something much more modern. Both can be achieved — it is largely a design conversation.

As with all our gates, the frame is fabricated in our workshop to the exact dimensions of your opening. If you have already sourced a specific timber or composite material you want to use, we can work with your supplier direct.

Frequently Asked Questions about Metal Gates in Nottingham

  • Why choose Nottingham Metalworks to build my metal gates?

James has over 17 years of experience in metal fabrication and handles every gate project personally — from the initial site visit through to fabrication and installation. We keep our operation lean so we can offer competitive pricing without cutting corners on materials or finish. Every gate is made to measure in our Nottingham workshop, properly primed before painting, and installed by the same team that built it. We are rated 5.0 stars on Google and a large proportion of our work comes through recommendation..

  • How much do metal gates cost in Nottingham?

Side and pedestrian gates start from £800 per gate, supply and install. Driveway gates start from £1,700 per pair. Automated gates are priced on application following a free site survey. These are starting prices — the final price depends on your opening width, the gate design, chosen infill, finish and installation conditions. We provide free site visits and written quotations with no obligation before any work begins.

  • What size can you make metal gates?

We fabricate gates to whatever size your opening requires. For residential driveway gates, the practical limits are largely determined by weight, the available swing space, and the ground conditions for the posts. A standard pair of hinged driveway gates will typically cover an opening of 3 to 4 metres. Where the slope or available space does not allow hinged gates to open fully, a single sliding gate is a practical alternative — we have made single sliding gates up to 5 metres wide. We will advise on the most suitable design and opening mechanism at the site visit once we have seen the opening.

  • What is your most popular metal gate style?

For a single metal gate, vertical bars with spear tops continue to be popular and the same is for hinged driveway gates although these will be arched whereas most garden side gates will be straight topped.

For composite metal gates having a straight top is more popular for single and driveway gates but with decorative spears too. The most popular composite infill continues to be grey followed by wood effect.

  • What locking options are available for metal gates?

For composite driveway gates we fit a Locinox lock as standard — a keyed lock built into the gate frame that is robust and secure. For open steel or wrought iron gates, bolt arrangements that allow a padlock are a popular and practical choice, though we can fit most gate lock types depending on the design. For driveway gates, the locking arrangement also depends on the opening method — automated gates use an electric lock, sliding gates can be manual or motorised, and most hinged double driveway gates use a Locinox or a drop bolt and padlock combination. We will advise on the right option for your gate design at the quotation stage.

  • Can I have a personalised or custom design built into my gate?

Yes. We can incorporate letters, numbers, initials or custom design elements into the gate frame or as welded-on additions. Because every gate is fabricated by hand in our workshop, the design is entirely flexible — if you can describe or sketch what you have in mind, we can almost certainly build it. Common personalisation requests include house numbers, monograms, and decorative panel work within the gate frame. Just discuss your ideas when we visit.

  • Do I need planning permission for metal gates in Nottingham?

In most cases, no. Gates up to 1 metre in height adjacent to a public highway, or up to 2 metres elsewhere on your property boundary, generally fall within permitted development rights and do not require planning permission. However, if your property is in a conservation area, is a listed building, or if planning permission was previously granted with a condition removing permitted development rights, different rules apply. We will flag anything worth checking during the site visit, but always recommend confirming with Nottingham City Council or your local authority before installation if you are in any doubt.
