Metal Garden Wall Railings

Garden wall railings are fitted along the top of a boundary wall — typically a brick or stone wall with raised pillars — to extend the effective height of the boundary and add a decorative finish. Because the height of the wall and the distance between pillars varies from one property to the next, this is almost always a bespoke job. A standard off-the-shelf panel will not sit flush with the pillars, match the wall height, or suit the masonry profile. Everything we make for wall top railings is measured and fabricated specifically for the opening it sits in.

The most common choice for garden wall railings is a spear top or ball top vertical bar design — both suit the typical Victorian and Edwardian front garden walls common in Nottingham and surrounding areas. We prime all wall top railings before installation and apply a final coat on site. Ball Top Railings Nottingham

Ball top railings have become increasingly popular over the last decade as an alternative to the more traditional spear or Fleur de Lis top. The ball finish gives a cleaner, more contemporary look that suits modern properties and new builds well, while still working with older Victorian and Edwardian frontages where the rounded top feels less severe than a spear.

The ball itself can vary in size — from a small diameter ball that sits almost flush with the bar, to a larger decorative ball that becomes a feature of the design. Half-sphere options are also available where a flat base ball is preferred. Because each ball is individually welded onto the vertical bar, the spacing and positioning can be adjusted to suit the design.

One popular finish option is painting the balls a contrasting colour to the bars — this picks out the detail, makes the railing more distinctive, and gives the installation a bespoke quality that a standard painted railing cannot achieve. Flat Top Metal Railings

Flat top railings have a continuous horizontal rail running across the top of all the vertical bars, with no bar tips protruding above it. This gives a clean, smooth finish that is comfortable to hold — which is why flat top railings are the natural choice wherever the top rail doubles as a handrail.

This makes them particularly well-suited to properties with steps leading up to a terrace, raised garden or front door. The railing can run horizontally across the boundary and then transition into a raked section alongside the steps using the same top rail profile — so the boundary railing and the stair handrail are one continuous piece of metalwork rather than two separate elements joined awkwardly at the base of the steps. 

The vertical bars on flat top railings can still carry decorative detail — small Fleur de Lis tips set below the top rail, scroll work in the lower section, or simple square bar with no decoration at all. The flat top rail itself can also have decorative elements welded onto it if you want more visual interest at the upper section of the fence. Estate Railings

Estate railings are a traditional style of steel boundary railing associated with larger properties, period homes and public green spaces -  characterised by their relatively thin, close-spaced vertical bars and elegant low-profile appearance. They are installed directly into the ground or along the top of a low boundary wall and are designed to define a perimeter without obscuring the

view of the property behind them.

We fabricate estate railings in mild steel to the traditional profile, and we have also been called on to replace and repair existing estate railing sections — often after damage from vehicles reversing into them, which is a common hazard given how thin and low-profile they are. If you need a matching replacement section for an existing run of estate railings, bring us a measurement and a photograph and we will replicate the profile as closely as possible. 

For front gardens, estate railings work particularly well when paired with a matching pedestrian or driveway metal gate of the same bar profile and finish, creating a coherent boundary look across the full frontage.

Vertical Bar Railings

Plain vertical bar railings remain one of the most popular and cost-effective boundary railing options. Without ball tops, spear finials or other decorative additions, the fabrication is more straightforward, which makes them an efficient choice for longer runs where budget is a consideration. The clean, minimal look also suits contemporary properties where decorative detailing would feel out of place.

The main decisions to make on vertical bar railings are the bar section size (square or round), the bar spacing (typically around 100mm centre to centre as standard), the overall height, and the finish. Because the bars are plain, the finish and colour carry more visual weight than on a decorative railing — anthracite grey and satin black are the most popular choices.

For longer runs, vertical bar railings are also a practical option for  matching a gate without the cost of replicating a highly decorative design across the full boundary length. A decorative gate with plain vertical bar railings running to each side gives a clear hierarchy — the gate is the feature, the railing is the boundary.

Railings Bow

Bow top railings — sometimes called loop top railings — are defined by their curved or arched top profile rather than a pointed or flat finish. The curved top is a deliberate safety design: it provides no sharp point to catch on, and the rounded profile is more difficult to grip and climb than a flat rail or spear top. For this reason, bow top railings are commonly specified for parks, schools, playgrounds and public areas where child safety is a consideration.

For residential use, bow top railings are a softer-looking alternative to spear top designs. They can be installed as a pure bow top — all bars finishing with a curved loop — or with alternating bow and straight vertical bars, which gives the railing a more varied rhythm and is a popular option for larger front garden boundaries.

Bow top railings are typically installed as standalone ground-fixed panels rather than wall top railings, though wall top installation is possible where the fixing arrangement suits. We will advise on the most appropriate configuration at the site visit.

Spear Top Metal Fencing

Spear top and Fleur de Lis railings are the most traditional of all metal railing styles — associated with Victorian and Edwardian ironwork and the classic British front garden. Despite decades of competition from ball top, bow top and flat rail alternatives, spear and Fleur de Lis designs remain among the most requested styles we produce.

The terms spear top and Fleur de Lis are often used interchangeably, and in practice there is a spectrum of designs between a simple pointed spear and a fully ornate Fleur de Lis — most customers are simply looking for a traditional pointed top with some decorative flourish, and the exact classification matters less than finding a design they like. We can show you a range of top profiles at the site visit, from the simplest spear through to more elaborate Gothic and Fleur de Lis patterns.

One simple way to add distinction to a spear top railing is to paint the finials a contrasting colour to the main bar — picking out the tips in gold or a RAL colour against a satin black base is a popular choice that adds character without changing the fabrication cost.
